Wear your best Derby hat at Butterfly Pavilion’s Bugs and Brews: Insect Derby. Hosted on Friday, May 1, this 21+ event recognizes the feats of invertebrates through unique animal encounters--cockroach racing and leafcutter ant feeding, a costume contest, craft beverages, and more! Take the excitement from Derby Day and cheer on invertebrates at Butterfly Pavilion. Bugs and Brews: Insect Derby grants an opportunity to explore the amazing abilities of invertebrates, from speed and endurance to flight and strength. Choose a craft beverage (or two) while observing invertebrates up close through special activities and walking through our exhibits. Wander through our conservatory with free-flying butterflies fluttering above you, gently touch a sea star at Water's Edge, or witness beetles, tarantulas, and more in our invertebrate enclosures. Whether you represent a Dung Beetle team and answer exhibit-based questions or approach our educational booth, the night is full of opportunities to learn how movement results in invertebrates winning the race of survival. Event Highlights: Two Drinks: Choose from beer, wine, or non-alcoholic options as you wander our exhibits. Derby Hat Contest: Wear your best Derby hat, with an invertebrate twist. No matter what you’re inspired by, whether it be butterflies, garden critters, or (faux) flowers, show off your style and celebrate these unique animals. Submit a photo for a chance to win prizes. After Hours Experience: Enjoy two hours of adults-only access while witnessing one-of-a-kind animal experiences, like cockroach racing and leafcutter ant feedings. Educational Booth: Peer into the lives of invertebrates and what makes them the fittest for survival. Metamorphaces LLC: Themed face painting, airbrush tattoos, and more! (Not included in ticket) Join us for a fun night, blending Derby themes with invertebrates galore.
